A Scholar, a Mentor, a Visionary Leader: A Birthday Tribute to Dr. Sunanda S. Aswale
Celebrating 30 October | Honouring a Life Devoted to Chemistry, Mentorship, and Academic Leadership
True educators do far more than teach a syllabus—they ignite ambition, instil discipline, and shape careers. Dr. Sunanda Shashikant Aswale Madam is one such educator, whose strict yet deeply supportive nature has left a lasting mark on generations of students and colleagues.
My own journey with Dr. Aswale Madam began in the Department of Chemistry at Lokmanya Tilak Mahavidyalaya, Wani, where I was first her student and later her colleague. Receiving her guidance in both roles has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional life. At every stage, she has supported me generously, encouraging me to build my academic career and to pursue research and teaching with confidence and rigour.
Her career reflects perseverance and a deep commitment to lifelong learning. Rising steadily from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor, then Professor, and now Principal of Gramgeeta Mahavidyalaya, Chimur, she has always led by example. Even while mentoring others, she kept challenging herself, clearing qualifying examinations and earning an inspiring array of credentials, including an M.Sc., a Ph.D. in Chemistry, SET, a B.Ed., and an additional B.A. in ELT.
Her scholarly contributions are equally distinguished. As a researcher and doctoral supervisor, she has published and presented more than 100 research papers across physical, ultrasonic, pharmaceutical, and environmental chemistry, alongside books she has authored and edited. These contributions have continually strengthened the wider scientific community. Her excellence in higher education was fittingly honoured with the Best Teacher Award (2021) from Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University.
What truly sets Dr. Aswale Madam apart is the way she connects classroom science with community life through hands-on initiatives. Wherever she serves, she builds a vibrant culture of learning and social responsibility. She has mounted an exhibition of all 118 chemical elements during the International Year of the Periodic Table (2019), conducted entrepreneurial soap- and kajal-making workshops and exhibitions, spearheaded COVID-19 vaccination awareness campaigns, arranged fire-safety and evacuation training, and, most recently, organised an inspiring marathon at Chimur.
Strict in discipline, dedicated to excellence, and endlessly encouraging toward colleagues and young academics, she exemplifies what it means to be a true leader. Away from work, she is a keen traveller who frequently visits lesser-known places.
At work, she treats her staff as members of her own family. Remarkably, she has achieved all this without ever stepping back from her family responsibilities. Her daughter is an anaesthetist, and her son completed a Ph.D. in robotics in the United States.
On her birthday, 30 October, I express my heartfelt gratitude for her unwavering mentorship and support.
